How often should I have an eye exam?

When should I have an eye exam?

IF you are wearing glasses or contacts lenses, and aged 61-years and older, you should see your eye doctor every year or as recommended by Eye-Care Professional.
If no vision correction is required, and you are between 18 to 60 year-old you should have your eye exams every two years.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are around 285 million people in the world who are visually impaired. WHO estimates that up to 80 percent of all visual impairment can be avoided or cured through early treatment.

The leading causes of visual impairment occur naturally with age. About 65 percent of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older.

Many eye health and vision problems occur naturally with age and with no obvious signs or symptoms. The most important way to prevent eye health issues from becoming unmanageable is by scheduling an annual exam with your eye doctor. More than 80 percent of all visual impairment is treatable, preventable or curable, so early diagnosis and care are critical.

20/20 vision is a measure of one's visual acuity and indicates how clearly we see objects on an eye chart at 20 feet. The eye chart contains images, usually letters or pictures, of a very specific size gradually getting smaller near the bottom of the page.

For people with 20/20 vision, light focuses perfectly on the retina to provide clear vision.
If your visual acuity test determines you have 20/20 vision, it means you can clearly see what a person with normal vision should be able to see from 20 feet away.

Seeing: Eyes and Vision.
Educational concepts include visual acuity, near vision, far vision, visual defects, color vision, and low-light vision.

Your Vision.
Your visual acuity at 20 feet helps to determine whether you need glasses or contacts for distance vision.

Your vision may include:
Myopia (Nearsightedness or Shortsightedness)
Hyperopia (Farsightedness or Longsightedness)
Astigmatism
Presbyopia. Close-up vision or “near vision”
Depth perception
Peripheral vision (seeing to the sides)
The ability to see colors

It's important to have regular eye exams even if you think you have 20/20 vision and that your eyes are healthy.
