Regular Eye Exams.

An annual eye exam is one of the most important diagnostic and preventative measures you can take to protect your vision and health.

Eye Exams.

If you're having trouble with your vision, seek an Eye Care Professional for an eye exam as part of your regular checkup with the doctor.
At your eye exam, you'll probably be asked to read from an eye chart. This is the chart with letters in different sizes. You also might be asked to look at some text up close, like reading from a book. These tests measure how well you see from close and from far away.

If you need glasses or contact lenses, there's a special "spectacle Trial frame and lenses" that lets you try a few different prescriptions until you find the one that gives you the clearest vision. It's kind of like a big pair of glasses, but a bunch of different lenses can be switched in and out really quickly.

The person doing your eye exam may switch between two different lenses and say, "Like this or like this?" You'll have to say which one looks clearest. There is no right answer - just what is best for you. Remember, the idea is that you get the correct prescription so your vision will be top-notch!

If you're going to get glasses, it's time to pick frames. It can be fun to try these on. Choose ones that are comfortable and sturdy. But also make sure you like them — you'll be wearing them a lot!

The lenses themselves can be made of different materials, such as safety glass or shatterproof plastic (polycarbonate). Because glass tends to be heavy and it may shatter, most glasses today are made of polycarbonate plastic. If you play sports, you may want to ask about special eyewear you can wear on the field.

Glass tends to be heavy and it can shatter. Plastic scratches easily, but it's often the best choices. If you play sports, you may want to ask about eyewear you can wear on the field.

With glasses, you'll also want to find out how to clean them properly. And it helps if you have a glasses case and put them in it when you're not wearing them. The last thing you want is to sit on your new glasses.Oh dear!

If you're going to get contact lenses, you'll get some advice from the ophthalmologist or optician about which kind will be best for you. Some are disposable and others need to be cleaned. When you learn which type you're going to get, you can start becoming an expert in how to wear them safely and keeping them clean. The most important thing about contact lenses is good hygiene to prevent infections in your eye.

But the really fun part of new glasses or contact lenses is how well you can see. They can make your whole world look better!

Eye on Normal Vision or 20/20 Vision.

Visual acuity (VA) is acuteness or clearness of vision, which is dependent on the sharpness of the retinal focus within the eye and the sensitivity of the interpretative faculty of the brain.

Vision or Visual Acuity (VA) is tested by reading a Snellen eye chart at a distance of 20 feet (6 meters).

The eye doctors have decided what a "normal" human being should be able to see when standing 20 feet away from an eye chart.

If you have 20/20 vision, that means when you stand 20 feet away from the chart, you can see what a "normal" human being can see. In other words, if you have 20/20 vision your vision is "normal". Many people can see what you can see at 20 feet.

If you have 20/40 (6/12) vision, that means when you stand 20 feet away from the chart you can only see what a normal human can see when standing 40 feet from the chart.

If  Visual Acuity is 20/100 means that when you stand 20 feet from the chart you can only see what a normal person standing 100 feet away can see. For those with 20/200 vision is considered to be legal blindness in the United States.

You can also have vision that is better than the norm. A person with 20/10 vision can see at 20 feet what a normal person can see when standing 10 feet away from the chart.

An eye exam seeks to find the prescription that will provide you at least 20/20 or 6/6 vision.

The Illegal Sale of Cosmetic Contact Lenses

You must have a prescription for any type of contact lenses, whether you need vision correction or not?

If you answered no then you are not alone.

In fact, the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP) has received many reports of patients (especially teenagers) who suffered from severe eye problems as a result of having purchased and used plano (non-prescriptive) cosmetic lenses from a non-physician. The worst part is that not only are these types of lenses being sold illegally to unsuspecting consumers, but they are also being sold without the proper instructions on how to use them.

Contact Lens Hygiene Tips...

If you wear contact lenses you need to understand lens care: If You Don't take care of your contact lenses properly, your contact lenses can cause your eyes to a variety of eye infections, including some that cause blindness.

Before you get started to wear contact lenses, you should know what steps are required to care for soft contact lenses.

The Basics of Soft Contact Lens Care: Clean, Rinse and Disinfect.

1. Wash your hands so that you don't transfer dirt and germs to your eye. Try to avoid moisturizing soaps, as they are not good for contact lenses. Dry your hands with a lint-free towel.

2. Remove one lens and clean it with the recommended solution. Cleaning removes eye-produced buildup, cosmetics and other debris that impairs lens comfort. The FDA recommends that you rub the lens in the palm of your hand with a few drops of solution, even if you are using a "no-rub" product.

3. Rinse the lens again to remove the loosened debris, making sure to take as long as the package directs: Rinsing is an important step.

4. Place the lens in your clean lens case or lens holder and fill with fresh solution; don't "top off" your old solution. Disinfecting kills microorganisms on the lens. Disinfection time varies from product to product; check the package for details.

5. Repeat steps two through four for your other lens.
